Experience the Vibrant Heritage of Peking Opera and Chinese Dance with an Afternoon of Music, Culture, and Tea Ceremony
(Albany, N.Y.) – The Chinese Community Center (CCC) invites everyone for a unique cultural experience that will engage all the senses as traditional Chinese performing arts take center stage at the Peking Opera Midterm Performance on Saturday, December 7, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The Chinese Community Center’s Oriental Orchestra will perform alongside Peking Opera artists in an afternoon of captivating music, dramatic storytelling, and graceful movement at the Rensselaer Newman Chapel, located at 2125 Burdett Ave., in Troy. Attendees will enjoy iconic Peking Opera performances, Chinese dance styles, and a refined tea ceremony.
The event features some of Peking Opera’s most celebrated scenes, including beloved pieces such as Peony Pavilion, The Three Kingdoms, Conversation in the Palace, and The Monkey King. Each opera scene brings stories of love, honor, and legendary heroism to life through intricate costumes, expressive vocals, and stylized gestures. Each performance will invite audiences into the vivid world of Chinese folklore and history.
Enhancing this cultural journey, attendees will be able to observe an authentic Chinese tea ceremony performed live. All guests will enjoy the experience of Chinese tea and traditional snacks at their seats; VIP guests will have priority seating closer to the stage, with the exclusive experience of a Tea Ceremony on their table.
The afternoon will also showcase diverse styles of traditional Chinese singing and dance, each marked by unique costumes and precise movements, including the display of classical Chinese water sleeves, which dates back thousands of years. The water sleeve is an elegant and expressive costume element, integral to Chinese classical dance and opera performances. These long, flowing sleeves extend beyond the performer’s hands, often reaching the floor, and are used to convey emotion, drama, and symbolism. Folk style singing will celebrate regional Chinese customs blending rhythmic beauty and storytelling, all meticulously choreographed to preserve the tradition and spirit of Chinese culture.
